History and purpose
The Navodaya system began under the National Policy on Education 1986. Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas are co-educational residential CBSE schools managed by Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti under the Ministry of Education. They provide education from Classes 6–12, with a focus on talented rural children. Entry is mainly through JNVST in Class 6; lateral entry to Classes 9 and 11 depends on vacancies. At least 75% of Class 6 seats are for rural candidates.
2027–28 exam and application dates
The Class 6 JNVST is scheduled for 28 November 2026 in both summer- and winter-bound schools. The original prospectus deadline was 31 July 2026; consult the Class 6 portal for extension notices rather than assuming an unverified final date. Class 9 and Class 11 lateral entry tests are scheduled for 10 April 2027; their portals display an extended application deadline of 15 October 2026. A date is always tied to its admission session; older two-phase schedules do not describe the new Class 6 examination.
Age, residence and school eligibility
Class 6: DOB 1 May 2015–31 July 2017 inclusive. Study in Class 5 during 2026–27 in a recognised school in the district of application and satisfy district residence and previous schooling requirements. Rural seats require the prescribed rural schooling record; simply living in a village is insufficient. A candidate cannot repeatedly take JNVST contrary to the prospectus rules.
Class 9: DOB 1 May 2012–31 July 2014 inclusive, with the required Class 8 study in 2026–27 and district eligibility.
Class 11: DOB 1 June 2010–31 July 2012 inclusive; Class 10 study during 2026–27 in a recognised school, residence/district conditions and passing Class 10 before admission. Read the specific prospectus for category, stream and school allocation rules.

Syllabus for Classes 6, 9 and 11
Use the new Class 6 MAT + EVS pattern and the relevant lateral-entry syllabus. The latest Class 11 prospectus includes ten mental-ability categories, English reading and grammar, and detailed Class 10-level Mathematics, Science and Social Science in Annexure A. The dedicated Class 11 page lists those topics and important exclusions.
Application, fees and selection
Apply through the class-specific NVS portal, using the required school-certified document, photograph/signatures and accurate personal details. Save the confirmation and download the admit card separately. Class 6 portal: apply here; Class 9; Class 11. Applications are free. Selection remains provisional until original document, residence, age, category and educational checks are complete. Teaching, boarding and lodging are generally free; Vidyalaya Vikas Nidhi applies to Classes 9–12 with specified exemptions and different rules for government employees’ wards. Check the prospectus rather than assuming every category pays the same amount.
